Customs seizes 6 live cats smuggled in rucksacks at Lok Ma Chau Spur Line

by R.Donald

Hong Kong Customs detected two suspected cases of illegal animal imports at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point on Monday, seizing six live cats with an estimated market value of about HK$60,000.

Customs officers intercepted a 59-year-old incoming male passenger and a 41-year-old incoming female passenger at the arrival hall. Upon examination, three live cats were found in each of their rucksacks. Both were arrested, and the cases have been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.

Customs reminded the public that importing animals into Hong Kong without a valid permit is an offence. Under the Rabies Regulation, those found guilty face a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and one year imprisonment.
