Onondaga County libraries set to bring in live reptiles for dinosaur-themed summer reading

by R.Donald

After children finish the school year, many are not thinking about the inevitable: Summer Reading. The Onondaga County Public Libraries are making it enjoyable with all kinds of fun activities.

Soule Branch kicked off the summer reading season with the annual Strawberry Social. This year was the 30th anniversary. People lined up for all kinds of strawberry treats on Wednesday for the legendary event.

This year’s summer reading is dinosaur themed: “Unearth a Story,” explained Yona Williams, a representative with the libraries.

There’s going to be giant foam dinosaur bones coming to some of our libraries.

The “dinosaurs” are not just in the past: the libraries are bringing in real reptiles for patrons to engage with.

There is also a new trading card program going on in the library: kids sign up for summer reading and get three starter cards plus a “how to play” card. “Reading Dragons and Friends” is the name of the program. Each week, there will be three new cards available. If kids read 30 minutes in a week, they get the cards. This is only available through city branches according to Williams.

If families are headed on vacation this summer, the “Reading Runway” at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport has been restocked! Head over near the TSA security checkpoint, where fliers will find a library full of free books. “Go grab a book, it’s free,” said Williams.
