Slow news day? Advice for shell-shocked owners amid spate of reptile escapes

by R.Donald

If you have noticed an unusual number of posts in local Facebook groups about stray tortoises, the hot weather isn’t making you imagine things – there has been a spate of reptile escapes during the heatwave.

The JSPCA confirmed that it had taken in 12 escaped tortoises over the past three weeks, which is “significantly more” than usual.

The animal charity said that one possible reason for the increase is male tortoises becoming “more active” during the hot weather and heading out “in search of a mate”.

Islanders are being urged to take precautionary measures, including securing gardens, to prevent their pet tortoises from escaping.

“While pet tortoises don’t usually dig long tunnels, they can easily scrape away soil and push underneath fences or gates,” the JSPCA said.

“To help prevent escapes, bury the perimeter barrier between 10 and 30 cm deep, depending on the size and species of your tortoise, and check your garden boundaries regularly for any weak spots.”

The charity also encouraged tortoise owners to ensure their pet is microchipped.

“If your tortoise is ever brought to us, a microchip allows us to quickly identify them and reunite them with their family without unnecessary delays.”

Islanders with an escaped tortoise are encouraged to notify the JSPCA as soon as possible by emailing info@jspca.org.je and including:

  • Description of the tortoise
  • Clear and recent photograph
  • The address the pet escaped from
  • Owner’s contact details
