Embraer’s Legacy 600 will always have a special place in the Brazilian manufacturer’s history since the aircraft was its first-ever entry into the private aviation sector. What followed was one of the most successful business aviation lineups ever, including thePhenom 300, which overtook the Cessna Citation Excel as the most popular private jet in the United States.

Interestingly, the Legacy was based on the ERJ 145, one of Embraer regional jets (ERJ). The ERJ 145, part of the same family that included the ERJ 135 and ERJ 140, was delivered in 1996, entering service with Continental Airlines’ regional affiliate, Continental Express.


5 Emrbaer’s entrance into business aviation

In the early 2000s, the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer decided to enter the private jet market with the Legacy. According to its 2000financial report, Embraer launched the Legacy executive jet in three versions: executive, shuttle, and authorities’ transportation. The then-president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Embraer, Maurício Novis Botelho, said that,

“The market recognized the competitive advantages of this family of products, and a significant volume of orders was placed at the time of its introduction.”

United States-based Swift Aviation was the first customer to order the aircraft in July 2000. According to Embraer, the Legacy was positioned between the mid-size and large corporate jets, offering an excellent combination of comfort, performance, and operating costs in the three different variants.

Furthermore, the Legacy aircraft combined some of the advantages that had made it unique among its competition, including a large passenger cabin, excellent operating performance, and modern technology. By the end of the year, Embraer booked 31 orders (25 from Swift Aviation and six from undisclosed customer (s)) for the private jet.

According toGuardianJet, a US-based aircraft broker, typically, the Legacy 600 seats 13 passengers, which is also its maximum passenger capacity. The aircraft has a range of 3,429 nautical miles (6,350 kilometers), with an altitude ceiling of 41,000 feet (12,496 meters). The Legacy 600 cabin is 6 feet (1.82 meters) high, 6.9 feet (2 meters) wide, and 49.8 (15.1 m) long, with three separate cabin zones for passengers and crew to enjoy.

While the aircraft was based on the ERJ 145, the 2000 annual report noted that the Legacy had new fuel tanks for more range and a centralized and lowered floor in the cabin, which allowed the installation of larger reclining seats and winglets at the wingtips to increase performance. Furthermore, the aircraft had specific entertainment and communication equipment, as well as new interior options.

3 Manufactured in China between 2012 and 2016

Embraer and the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) entered into an agreement to produce the Legacy 600/650 private jets in China in April 2011. The agreement would see using HEAI’s infrastructure, financial resources, and workforce to build the business aircraft. HEAI was initially established to assemble, sell, and provide after-sale support for the Embraer ERJ 145 to Chinese carriers in December 2002.

The manufacturer’s 2016 annual report, published by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), only disclosed that the company was in the process of liquidating the Harbin Embraer Aircraft Industry Company, adding that it had delivered two Legacy 650 aircraft manufactured at the facility in 2015. Embraer held a 51% share in the company, while the remaining 49% belonged to other party/parties.

According to Embraer’s 2020 financial report, disclosed as an SEC filing, the aircraft manufacturer introduced the Legacy 650, based on the Legacy 600, in October 2009. The aircraft added more range for up to 14 passengers, with the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil, ANAC) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifying the Legacy 650 in October 2010 and February 2011, respectively.

“By the end of 2020, the fleet of Legacy 600 and Legacy 650 comprised more than 300 jets in service in over 45 countries.”

However, the SEC filing added that the Legacy 600 was discontinued in 2016 to focus on the success of the Legacy 650 purely. Between 2016 and 2020, Embraer delivered 26 Legacy 600/650 aircraft, with the Legacy 650 being phased out in mid-2020.
