Kylian Mbappe is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expires at the end of the season, with Real Madrid and Liverpool linked with a move for the Frenchman
Kylian Mbappe previously held talks with Liverpool owner John W Henry as the forward continues to be linked with a move to Anfield after confirming he will leave Paris Saint-Germain.
Mbappe, 25, has informed PSG that he will depart the Parc des Princes in the summer after seven years at the club, according to The Athletic. An official announcement will be made ‘in the next few months’. During his time in the French capital, Mbappe has scored 243 goals in 290 matches, winning 13 major trophies.
Real Madrid are the reported frontrunners to sign the France international on a free transfer, but it’s claimed some ‘influential’ members of Mbappe’s camp are not happy with the terms currently on the table. Earlier this week, Marca revealed that Real are having issues with Mbappe’s agent and mother, Fayza Lamari.
This could give Liverpool the chance to hijack Real’s proposed move for Mbappe and it wouldn’t be the first time the Reds have attempted to sign him. While Mbappe was playing for Monaco in early 2017, the striker held a two-hour meeting with Henry on his private jet, as per L’Equipe. It was reported that Henry tried to win over Mbappe and his family by flying over to Monaco and inviting them on board.
They were said to have talked for two hours, discussing Mbappe’s future before Liverpool eventually missed out on him. PSG confirmed the arrival of Mbappe in August 2017 on a season-long loan deal with an option to make the transfer permanent for a fee understood to be worth £166m.
Mbappe signed a four-year contract at PSG in 2018 and he has since become their talisman, claiming the Ligue 1 top goalscorer in each of the last five years.
He has flirted with the idea of moving to Real Madrid for years, but in 2022 he famously U-turned on a switch to stay at PSG. He signed a two-year contract with an option of a third, which he will now not renew. According to Bild, Real have offered Mbappe an annual salary of £30m per year for him to join.
As for Liverpool, they could now re-enter the race and Jurgen Klopp, who will step down as manager at the end of the season, praised Mbappe back in 2018. The German told RMC Sport: “I love him, to be honest. What a player he is and a nice lad as well, so he’s a really good kid. What a player, what a player.
“Everyone knows him since he was 16, 17 when he impressed in Monaco’s youth teams, and I saw videos of him when he was 17 and he destroyed defensive lines as he is doing now.
“He’s at an unbelievable level of consistency at that age. He’s an outstanding player, that’s clear, but he can deliver, deliver and deliver, which shows he’s really good educated boy and he knows what he is doing.”
