Partnership integrates OneWeb satcom capabilities with self-forming mesh networking to deliver resilient communications at the tactical edge.

Airbus Public Safety and Security and Meshmerize have announced a strategic partnership aimed at closing a critical connectivity gap in emergency response operations: extending resilient satellite communications into locally distributed, self-forming mesh networks designed specifically for first responders.

The collaboration combines Airbus’ OneWeb satellite communications capabilities with Meshmerize’s tactical mesh networking platform, creating an end-to-end connectivity architecture that remains operational when terrestrial infrastructure is degraded, congested, or entirely unavailable — conditions that are increasingly common in large-scale incidents, natural disasters, and complex urban emergencies.

Tactical Edge Challenge: Traditional satellite communications solutions offer backhaul, but they have never reached the operational edge. This means that individual response teams, vehicles, and forward command posts have to rely on terrestrial networks that may not be working anymore. The Airbus-Meshmerize solution addresses this gap by using a smaller number of satellite gateway nodes to provide backhaul connectivity, while Meshmerize’s mesh networking technology distributes that connectivity across the entire response team through a self-healing, multi-hop architecture.
The joint solution enables rapid field deployment, multi-hop coverage spanning personnel, vehicles, and command posts, and a scalable pathway from satellite backhaul through local mesh distribution to end-user devices — without requiring each individual responder to carry a dedicated satellite terminal or subscription.

Operational and Cost Advantages: The architecture offers significant operational and cost advantages over traditional methods. By using shared gateway nodes instead of per-responder terminals to connect to satellites, agencies can greatly lower the cost of buying hardware and airtime, make logistics easier, and quickly increase coverage as incident footprints grow.

This model fits with the general trend in public safety communications toward shared infrastructure and software-defined networking, where being able to work with other systems and using resources efficiently are just as important as having good coverage.

Industry Significance

The partnership reflects growing recognition across the public safety sector that no single connectivity layer — whether terrestrial TETRA, LTE/5G broadband, or satellite — can independently guarantee communications continuity across all operational scenarios. Hybrid architectures that intelligently combine multiple access technologies are increasingly seen as the foundation for next-generation mission-critical communications.
