Resident doctors on strike: ‘We want to feel valued and not go elsewhere’

Resident doctors are on the picket line today (Monday 29 June), calling for their pay to be restored to 2008 levels.Speaking from the picket line at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Dr Steven Montgomery, Chair of the Northern Ireland Resident Doctor Committee, said doctors are taking industrial action after years of pay erosion. The 24-hour walkout, which began this morning, will continue until 7am on Tuesday 30 June, with resident doctors withdrawing their labour from hospitals and GP surgeries across Northern Ireland.A Department of Health spokesperson said Health Minister Mike Nesbitt was ‘disappointed’ by the strike action and to go beyond the 3.5% as recommended by the independent pay review recommendation, would have significant repercussions on the entire public sector.
