Some of the best views of the San Diego skyline come from Harbor Island. A mixed-use redevelopment of Harbor Island West Marina is bringing in new accommodations for larger megayachts. Simultaneously, the plans call for a resort-like atmosphere, with more dining, retail, and relaxation amenities for slip holders.

At the western end of the island, the marina has offered upwards of 600 slips for boats and yachts to 100 feet (30.5 meters). The redevelopment will see 623 slips amid concrete docks, including slips for power and sailing superyachts to 140 feet (42.7 meters). It’s taking place over the next two years, in phases. Phase one began in April, in fact, limited to select portions of the docks and the land to still allow for summer season visitors. The remaining phases similarly will preserve areas of the marina, since Southern California is a year-round destination.

When fully redeveloped, Harbor Island West Marina will have new amenities across 3.8 acres of land and 22 acres of water. Besides the new slips, a new fuel dock will be in place, as will controlled access and security systems. Yacht owners, guests, and crew will have concierge services and a business center to take advantage of as well. Furthermore, new spas, a gym, and a pool all will help create the resort-like setting. A publicly accessible viewing deck and waterfront promenade will complement the property, too.

The family-owned marina has long been open to the local community, a facet that remains important for the future. The vision is for a recreational destination, not just a place to dock. To that end, several shops, a market and café, and restaurants will be accessible. Overall, 16,000 square feet (about 1,486 square meters) of commercial space will be filled.
