What is $1m-a-week superyacht doing near Herm – and why was Keira Knightley banned from wearing shoes on it?

As an A-list movie star, Kiera Knightly’s used to the finer things in life.

But even the Oscar-nominated actress was instructed to take her shoes off when she stepped on board the $1m-a-week superyacht ‘Savannah’ to film her latest Netflix movie – ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’.

This weekend, the one-of-a-kind boat moored up in the Little Russel, between Herm and Guernsey, allowing people on both islands to gaze from afar at its award-winning exterior.

The luxurious, eco-friendly hybrid motor yacht comes with a nine metre swimming pool, spa, Turkish bath – and even its own DJ decks.

As if that wasn’t enough there’s a submerged underwater ‘Nemo’ lounge – for passengers to admire the local sea life – which also doubles as a cinema.

With wrap-around glass walls, stunning interiors and polished steel surfaces it’s no surprise Boat International described Savannah as “one of the most sought-after charter yachts on the market”.

Netflix spent a reputed $1m a week hiring the boat in 2024 as the main location of its high-end crime thriller, which features a host of stars including Guy Pierce, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Hannah Waddingham, Kaya Scodelario, and David Morrissey.

But the owners banned the actors – along with the crew – from wearing shoes or eating on board over fears they’d damage the boat, which cost an eye-watering €140m, according to LuxuryLaunches.com.

The 70-strong film crew was also banned from using tripods or stands, or resting on furniture, for fear of scraping any surfaces, leading Director Simon Stone to describe their experience as the “inverse of luxury”.

The reason the boat is in the Bailiwick is unclear, however Ms Knightly is not thought to be onboard.

Unfortunately for anybody who fancies splashing $1,000,000 on a tour around the Bailiwick, Savannah is currently believed to be unavailable to hire.
