Lotus Cars Limited has officially announced the launch of the Hethel Performance Hub (HPH), an initiative designed to transform its historic Norfolk headquarters into a collaborative UK center for high-performance automotive engineering, advanced manufacturing, and low-volume industrial production.
The launch aims to accelerate innovation across niche, low-volume automotive sectors by establishing a single, connected ecosystem. The strategy builds directly upon more than £150 million of recent investment across Lotus’s UK operations, including its sports car headquarters at Hethel and Lotus Advanced Structures (LAS) in Norwich.

A Platform for Industry Collaboration
The Hethel Performance Hub transitions the site from a single-brand operation into a multi-partner network. The platform provides automotive OEMs, emerging manufacturers, motorsport teams, technology providers, and academic institutions with direct access to Lotus’s established supply chain, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and motorsport expertise within a live operational environment.
By bringing these entities together, the Hub is designed to remove the traditional barriers to innovation in high-performance sectors—such as high infrastructure costs, lack of scale, and fragmented engineering capabilities. This collaborative framework allows partners to develop, test, and industrialise next-generation components and vehicles with reduced financial risk and faster time-to-market.
The Hub is already fully operational, with active engineering and manufacturing programs underway. Early confidential collaborations are currently being executed with a diverse group of partners, including a UK-based performance car brand, an international electric vehicle manufacturer, and a European low-volume vehicle producer.
Infrastructure and Regional Growth
The expansion is supported by ongoing infrastructure and regional development works surrounding the Hethel site. Current major civil works include access and connectivity improvements, which are expected to unlock significant development land to facilitate future site expansion and support the long-term growth of the automotive ecosystem.
The long-term objective is to establish Hethel as a globally recognised centre for shared research and development, specialist low-volume production, and continuous technological advancement.
Executive Leadership Commentary

Matt Nice, Deputy Managing Director of Lotus Cars, stated: “Hethel Performance Hub is about unlocking the full potential of what exists here. We’re taking world-class capability—engineering, manufacturing, motorsport—and turning it into a platform for partnership. Crucially, it’s not just about access, it’s about bringing the right people together. By creating an environment where partners can collaborate, develop and deliver side by side, we enable a faster, smarter way to innovate in a sector where traditional models often slow things down.”

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), added: “The UK automotive sector has a world-renowned record of innovation, engineering excellence and specialist manufacturing, and the Hethel Performance Hub is an example of how collaboration can turn that capability into competitive advantage. By bringing partners together to develop, test and industrialise new technologies more quickly with reduced risk, initiatives like this will help strengthen Britain’s position as a leader in advanced high-performance and low-volume vehicle manufacturing.

Industry Minister Chris McDonald MP highlighted the national significance of the project: “The Hethel Performance Hub shows how our Industrial Strategy is supporting the UK car sector—backing innovation, strengthening supply chains and accelerating advanced manufacturing. By bringing together industry, academia and technology partners, this investment will help boost exports, drive high-performance automotive production, support skilled jobs and cement the UK’s position as a global leader in automotive innovation.”
