As the number of electric vehicles in the Principality has grown in recent years, finding a parking space has become increasingly difficult for residents, commuters, and even taxi drivers, both day and night.
For many, the issue is free EV charging, particularly when drivers have to pay for the same service just across the border.
The debate resurfaced during the latest EVER Monaco show and has since been taken up by members of the National Council.
Prince Albert II talked to Monaco-Matin about that topic:
Given that Monaco has no control over the energy sources it relies on, does it still make sense to offer free charging for electric vehicles?
“Free charging has been a powerful incentive in accelerating the shift towards cleaner mobility. Today, electric vehicles account for almost 20% of Monaco’s vehicle fleet, which is significant. I believe the energy transition must be a collective effort, with everyone contributing in proportion to their consumption. We are currently considering changes to the system that would maintain support for cleaner mobility while ensuring a fairer sharing of the burden on infrastructure.”
