Video Captures Destruction: Train Carrying Automobiles Derails and Hits Bridge Support

by R.Donald

In Barrio Logan, San Diego, a multi-car train derailed while carrying a cargo of automobiles. As the train derailed, it was passing beneath a road, and a number of the cars collided with the supports of the bridge above.

Footage from the scene shows the damage done to the overpass as the heavy train cars come to rest against the pillars. The road and rail have been closed as the damage is assessed, and repairs are made.

It is suspected that, due to the damage and the safety involved for both the road and rail, the closure of Harbor Drive near Petco Park could be a long one. At present, there is no estimate of how long the area will be unsafe for cars and pedestrians.

However, it has been confirmed by city officials that the derailment has caused significant damage. At present, repair teams are still working to restore the road and supporting pillars to an acceptable standard.

Multi-Car Derailment

The video shared online shows the shocking moment the train cars derail, collapsing slowly sideways onto the ground and structure. One of the train cars narrowly misses the supports, but others, underneath the overpass, collapse into the support of the busy San Diego road above.

The train cars and their cargo of automobiles were quickly cleared from the lines. It has been confirmed that trolley movement has resumed in the area. However, BNSF Railway and San Diego Harbor Police investigators are looking into the cause of the derailment. They have reassured people that the train cars didn’t contain any hazardous materials. Furthermore, no injuries had been reported from the derailment.

Long Delays For Commuters

The Harbor Drive road affected by the train derailment remains closed in both directions until the damage is assessed and repairs are made. This has caused serious delays for people who rely on the road for their daily commutes. One local told NBC: “Every single day when I go to work, Monday to Friday in the morning, and then I come back this way as well.”

Their driving route will be affected until the repairs are made.

The structural integrity of the road and pillars is the priority of the council and repair teams. Until it is deemed completely safe to use again, the road will stay closed.
