Two Stray Cats at Chinese Airport Officially Hired as “Rodent Control Department”… Now Three Full-Time Members Including a Kitten

Recently, a story about a family of cats living at an airport has been spreading on Chinese social networking services (SNS), gaining popularity.

According to Bongmyeon News in China on July 9, Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport in Gansu Province officially recruited two stray cats to create a dedicated “rodent control department.” Recently, a kitten was born and is now being cared for by airport staff.

According to airport staff, the three-member cat family resides near Gate D58. Their living quarters, arranged by the airport, are equipped with beds, cat towers, and air purifiers. Passengers can meet the cat family after passing through the security checkpoint and exiting the elevator.

However, some passengers have expressed safety concerns, fearing that the cats might scratch people. In response, the airport allows the cats to stay in their designated quarters most of the time, only letting them out occasionally. There are dedicated staff members who look after the cats, administer regular vaccinations, and thoroughly monitor their health.

SNS Cat Naming Event Ensures Their Status as “Mascots”

Earlier this year, two stray cats wandering around the airport were spotted and became a hot topic on SNS. The airport provided the cats with a home and appointed them as head and deputy head of the “Rodent Control Task Force.” An event was also held on SNS to collect name ideas, resulting in the cats being named Xiangbao and Cuihua.

An airport staff member stated, “The three cats are firmly protecting the ‘Rodent Control Task Force’ together and currently serve as mascots, stopping countless passengers in their tracks as they pass through the airport.”
