Vets urge football fans to take caution during the World Cup

Veterinary care provider Medivet & Partners has issued the advice, warning loud noise and cheering during matches could cause stress and anxiety for cats and dogs.

Andrew McVey, branch partner at Medivet Orrell Park, said: “It’s possible to help dogs and cats get used to loud noises so that they eventually have a calmer response.

“Switch on footage of cheers from football matches and make sure the first session is so low your pet barely reacts at all.”

Medivet is encouraging gradual desensitisation by slowly increasing noise levels, all while maintaining a positive experience for the animal.

Mr McVey said: “The trick is to replace any negative association with loud, anxiety-inducing sounds with a positive one, so praising your pet and rewarding them with their favourite treat, or playing with them for a short period triggers a positive emotional response.”

“There are also certain products that help, which include pheromones that are odourless to humans but have a calming effect on your pet, ideal for stressful situations.

“However, it’s important to note that these may take up to three months to work.”

He also recommends setting up a designated quiet area for pets during match screenings, complete with familiar bedding, toys and water.

Mr McVey said that while the tournament offers “great fun for humans,” unfamiliar guests and crowded rooms could be distressing for animals.
