GehGeh reveals viral wedding was a movie publicity stunt

by R.Donald

Popular content creator and self-styled relationship coach, Emmanuel Obruste, better known as GehGeh, has told Saturday Beats that the viral videos of him in traditional wedding attire with a woman were promotional content tied to a movie project, not a real marriage.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, GehGeh clarified that the widely circulated wedding was never real but a publicity stunt for the project.

He said, “It was all content for visibility for the movie I was working on. Every content creator knows there are different strategies you can use to generate discussions and make your work trend. That’s the approach I used. The goal was to get people talking, and it worked.”

Responding to criticism that his actions contradicted his relationship advice, he dismissed the claims of hypocrisy.

“My advice has never been that people shouldn’t get married. What I always tell people is to be careful, especially when it comes to their finances. Use your sense when you’re with a woman. Marriage itself is not the problem; you just have to be wise,” he said,

On his personal life, GehGeh maintained that he is not rushing into a real marriage. “Marriage is a good thing. It’s not something I would hide or do behind closed doors. If I decide today that I want to get married, do you know how many sponsors I would get? It’s not as if anyone caught me getting married secretly. We posted the wedding video ourselves because it was part of the promotion.

“I’m very comfortable. I can feed myself, take care of my children and meet my responsibilities. So when I eventually decide to get married, it will be real, not for fame or publicity.”

He added that the staged scenes had not pushed him toward settling down with the woman involved in the content.

He also noted the positive side of the backlash for his career, saying that the controversy has ultimately worked in his favour, boosting his visibility and attracting more media opportunities.

“I get lots of press and interview requests now. At the end of the day, it’s social media. Content is supposed to spark conversations, whether they’re good or bad. Once people are talking about it, it has done its job.”

The clips, which flooded social media in late July 2026, showed GehGeh and a lady (identified by some as Mary) dressed in matching burgundy traditional outfits. They featured dancing, cake-cutting and reception scenes that many took as evidence of a private traditional ceremony in Minna, Niger State. The footage sparked intense debate because of GehGeh’s long-running brand of advising men on relationships, finances and marriage through his “University of Wisdom and Understanding.”

For years, the influencer has been known for sharp commentary that many interpreted as anti-marriage by many . He has spoken about marriage as a potential financial burden or “trap,” highlighted multiple baby mamas in his personal life, and criticised some celebrities for rushing into weddings. Followers and critics alike viewed the videos as a shocking U-turn.

Online reactions poured in immediately. Some fans expressed betrayal, accusing him of abandoning the “brotherhood” and leaving men “for the streets.” One person claiming to be a former manager alleged that GehGeh’s teachings had influenced him to leave his own marriage. Others mocked the apparent hypocrisy with memes and skits, while a section of supporters congratulated the supposed couple or defended his right to change. Speculations ranged from a genuine secret wedding to AI-generated fakes or a publicity stunt. An eyewitness account from Minna briefly fuelled claims that bride price had been paid and a low-key reception held, but those reports remained unverified independently.

GehGeh initially pushed back online, questioning whether he had ever explicitly told people not to marry and suggesting at one point that the content involved representing a family member or was AI-related. The conversation stayed hot for days, with the videos trending across platforms.
