In an age when weddings are often associated with grand venues, luxury cars and extravagant celebrations, a wedding in Jharkhand stood apart with a simple yet powerful message against dowry and the unnecessary display of wealth.
Janardan Kumar Mahto, a resident of Teliadih Tangtona village in Bokaro district, arrived at his wedding not in a decorated car or a grand convoy of vehicles, but on a bullock cart.
The wedding between Janardan and Shweta Kumari of Mungo Bagda village was solemnised without any dowry. The groom’s decision to ride a bullock cart to the bride’s village turned the ceremony into a talking point, with many seeing it as a return to traditional wedding customs and a statement against the dowry system.
The bullock cart was not merely a mode of transport but the centrepiece of the celebration. After the wedding rituals were completed, the bride’s farewell ceremony was also carried out on the same cart, preserving the simplicity and traditional character of the occasion.
The wedding procession also moved away from modern-day practices. There was no DJ music or flashy display. Instead, the air resonated with traditional Kudmali folk tunes. The guests walked to the village, accompanied by a traditional horse dance performance.
The wedding rituals were conducted according to Kudmali customs and traditions. The Kudmali community is an indigenous ethnic group primarily found in the Chota Nagpur plateau region, spread across Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar.
The unique idea was brought to life with the support of local villagers. Mithilesh Mahato from Manjura village painted the bullock cart, while Bhubaneswar Mahato from Dumarkudar village and others decorated it in a traditional Kudmali style.
For the families involved, the wedding was more than just a marriage ceremony. It was an effort to revive local customs while sending a message against the social practice of dowry and the growing trend of extravagant celebrations.
The unusual wedding in Bokaro has since drawn attention for its simplicity, highlighting that celebrations need not be defined by material possessions, but by traditions, values and mutual respect.
