Russian bride discovers a golden Vietnamese wedding tradition

by R.Donald

Photos and videos from the wedding of Ba Ho, 27, from Hoa Trach commune in Quang Tri province, and Olga, 25, a Russian national, have recently drawn widespread attention online.

The Russian bride’s radiant appearance was one of the highlights of the celebration, but for Olga herself, it was the scale and traditions of a Vietnamese wedding that delivered some of the biggest surprises.

‘Would you like to be my princess?’

Ho and Olga’s relationship began with a chance encounter thousands of kilometers from Vietnam.

In 2025, Ho moved to Russia for work and took a job as a waiter at a restaurant in Moscow. By coincidence, Olga lived only about one kilometer away.

One day, she came to the restaurant for a meal and was warmly welcomed by Ho. Olga said she was struck by the Vietnamese man’s gentle eyes from their first meeting, and the two began talking.

Ho was not yet fluent in Russian, while Olga spoke no Vietnamese. But both could communicate in Chinese, giving them an unexpected common language.

After that first encounter, Olga began returning to the restaurant regularly, giving the pair more opportunities to see each other.

Their brief conversations gradually developed into something deeper, helped by Ho’s willingness to take the initiative. He invited her out on his days off, occasionally surprised her with flowers and gifts, and offered encouragement during stressful periods of study and work.

As they grew closer, Ho learned that Olga spoke several languages, including English, Chinese and Japanese. She had chosen to pursue science, a field her late father had loved and hoped his daughter would follow. She currently teaches while continuing her studies.

“When we first met, I was impressed by her beauty, but later it was her intelligence and gentle personality that made me fall deeply in love with her,” Ho said.

Because of her looks, Ho often called Olga his “princess.”

During one conversation, Olga unexpectedly told him: “If a man calls a woman a princess, their relationship should be love.”

Ho immediately recognized his opportunity.

“Then would Olga like to be my princess?” he asked.

She said yes and soon afterward made a video call to her mother to introduce Ho as her boyfriend.

Love tested by distance and family concerns

With Olga, Ho said he experienced the romance and sweetness of love in a way he had never known before.

She cooked for him, reminded him not to work too hard and encouraged him to pay greater attention to his health.

But their relationship was far from straightforward.

During more than a year together, the couple faced several challenges, including initial opposition from both families.

Olga’s mother was reluctant to see her daughter marry someone whose home was nearly 7,000 kilometers away. Ho’s parents also had concerns about their son building a life with a woman from a distant country with significant cultural and language differences.

There were practical hurdles as well, from paperwork and accommodation to employment arrangements.

At one point, the pressure became so overwhelming that Ho considered giving up. Olga’s commitment to the relationship, however, helped convince him to keep going.

By August 2026, the couple had won over both families and decided to marry in Quang Tri, Ho’s hometown.

The timing carried even greater meaning for them: Olga was pregnant with their first child.

A Vietnamese wedding full of surprises

Because of the long journey, Olga’s mother, who is elderly and was not in suitable health to travel, could not attend the wedding in Vietnam. Her younger brother represented the bride’s family.

Before the ceremony, Ho carefully explained Vietnamese wedding customs to Olga so she would know what to expect.

One tradition she particularly enjoyed was wearing an ao dai, Vietnam’s traditional long dress. Olga liked how the outfit was modest while still accentuating a woman’s beauty.

The groom’s family originally planned to invite around 1,000 guests.

Concerned that such a huge celebration might overwhelm his wife, Ho reduced the guest list to about 500.

Even then, Olga was stunned by the size of the wedding.

At Russian weddings she had previously attended, there were typically only a few dozen guests. In Quang Tri, guests seemed to keep arriving in wave after wave.

“Relatives, neighbors and friends came in large numbers that day because they wanted to meet the Russian bride,” Ho said. “Everyone complimented her on how beautiful and charming she was.”

Gold gifts leave Russian bride stunned

The biggest surprise came during the gift-giving ceremony.

Olga watched in amazement as members of Ho’s family came forward one after another to present her with gold jewelry.

The custom was completely different from what she was accustomed to in Russia, where wedding gifts are predominantly given in cash.

For Olga, the gold ceremony became another memorable introduction to Vietnamese wedding culture.

For Ho, however, the most emotional moment was simpler.

It came when the couple exchanged wedding rings and officially became husband and wife in front of their families and loved ones.

After more than a year of romance, cultural differences, family concerns and the challenge of building a relationship across borders, Ho said the wedding marked the most beautiful beginning he could have imagined for their life together.
