The Whitecaps defender exchanged vows in an intimate micro-wedding while continuing his recovery from injury.
One of Canada’s best-known soccer players has added a new title off the field — ”husband.”
This week, Vancouver Whitecaps FC defender and Canadian men’s national team player Sam Adekugbe exchanged vows during a micro-wedding ceremony at Vancouver City Hall, completing a milestone in his personal life while taking a year off from playing competitive football.
The ceremony was held in council chambers on July 9, and was part of a City of Vancouver micro-wedding program that allows couples to host small weddings with up to 30 guests.
A social media post shared by the city showed the newlyweds ringing the ceremonial ship’s bell following their vows — a tradition for couples married at city hall.
Alongside the city posting a video of the newlyweds, the couple also shared wedding pictures captained as “The Adekugbes.”
Since being ruled out of Canada’s 2026 tournament due to an Achilles tendon injury, Adekugbe has stayed in the spotlight as a TSN analyst. He was originally selected to play for the team but was later sidelined by the injury. He also played for Canada in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
For Adekugbe, the week delivered a different kind of victory — one measured not in goals, but in wedding bells.
