Stranded catamaran in Pollensa Bay must be moved

by R.Donald

A catamaran, Mumua, has been stranded in the Sa Marina area of Alcudia on the Bay of Pollensa for the past two months. A hole in the hull, the result of the boat having been dashed against the rocks, prevents its Finnish owner from moving it. But the Costas Authority last week gave him seven days to do just that. If not, he will face fines.

63-year-old Timo lives on the boat. It was anchored in the bay, but an anchor line broke one night, and the boat drifted until hitting rocks. He has been waiting for a Palma-based company to provide the solution – an inflatable system that will allow the boat to be towed to the port in Alcudia and to the dry dock for repairs.

After leaving his job as the head of an import business, he decided to sail in the Mediterranean. For the past ten years he has been in Italy and now in Mallorca. He was in Can Picafort before moving to the Bay of Pollensa. He’s thinking of selling the Mumua, a reason being the lack of moorings in Mallorca. He has had offers. He’ll buy a camper van instead.

Being in Sa Marina hasn’t been without its alarms. One night he woke up on the deck sofa and found a couple having sex in the salon. On another occasion, three people tried to break into the boat looking for stuff to steal; they fled when they saw Timo. The water is very shallow; it’s easy to get on board – and off.
