Alleged rescue owner charged with animal cruelty after 57 dead cats found in backyard shed

FLEMINGTON, W,Va. (WDTV/Gray News) – A West Virginia woman running an alleged animal rescue has been arrested after deputies say they found dozens of dead animals on her property.

According to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, Karen Anderson, 55, is facing cruelty to animals charges in the case.

Authorities say their investigation started after a power company employee working near Anderson’s home reported smelling a strong odor of decay before spotting swarms of flies and dead cats in cages in a backyard shed.

When deputies arrived, they confirmed the foul odor at the property and spoke to Anderson.

Deputies said she told them that she operated an animal rescue called Aaron’s Hope for Paws while acknowledging the shed’s condition, but hadn’t been able to clean it due to medical issues.

Taylor County deputies obtained a search warrant and returned to the property.

When they tried to enter the shed, they said the door was blocked by cat carriers. Once cleared, however, they found no food or water for the animals in temperatures above 80 degrees without any ventilation.

Fifty-seven dead cats were found in various stages of decay, in cages, on the floor, in garbage bags and trash cans, deputies noted.

Authorities ended up seizing 36 cats, three dogs and two birds from the residence. Seven cats from the shed needed immediate medical attention and were taken to an animal hospital. Three deceased kittens were also found inside the home, with another tragically dying on the way to the hospital.

The surviving animals are currently in the care of the Taylor County Humane Society and the Marion County Humane Society, who recently asked for donations to help care for the cats.

Anderson was booked into the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, with a bond set at $60,000.
