Beyond Aero leverages BYA-1 launch operator Luxaviation to drive operational readiness

Luxaviation Group could later this decade perform demonstration flights of the BYA-1, a hydrogen fuel cell-powered business jet being developed by Beyond Aero.

Contained in a memorandum of understanding signed by the pair, the pact will also see Luxaviation become the launch operator of the BYA-1.

However, the operator has yet to commit to acquiring the six-passenger aircraft, certification of which is targeted for 2030.

“At this stage, Luxaviation has not placed an aircraft order or letter of intent for the BYA-1,” the French developer states.

“The collaboration is structured as a pre-commercial MoU focused on operational preparation, rather than fleet commitments.”

Beyond Aero says the collaboration will focus on “real-world operational readiness”, with the pair to jointly define “mission profiles, deployment scenarios, and service integration”.

“Luxaviation’s global expertise in business aviation operations will support Beyond Aero in bridging the gap between aircraft development and commercial service to prepare the deployment of hydrogen-electric aviation in Europe,” it adds.

In addition to Luxaviation’s own operations, the pact will also assess the readiness of airports and fixed-base operations to accommodate hydrogen-powered aircraft, including the provision of fuel infrastructure.

But the pair envisage an even deeper collaboration: the pact is “expected to evolve toward demonstration flights and operational validation under EASA frameworks”, Beyond Aero says, “with the objective of enabling the aircraft’s entry into service in real-world conditions”.

Luxaviation and its advanced air mobility unit Sigma Air Mobility have previously signed early stage agreements with a string of aircraft developers including Lilium, Supernal and Volt Aero. Those programmes are now defunct or indefinitely paused.

Beyond Aero recently completed a preliminary design review for the BYA-1, selecting pusher-configured electric propfans in place of the ducted electric fans seen on previous iterations and upping the maximum take-off weight.
